First Steps

May 2004 saw the artists Angus Fairhurst and Damien Hirst join trustees in an awareness-raising visit to Uganda. This was the subject of a BBC Radio Four programme broadcast in June that year which attracted much attention and led to expressions of support from many quarters. A visit in February 2005 included three of the trustees and sculptors Phillip King, PPRA, CBE, and Ann Christopher, RA, together with Andrea Rose of the British Council. The support of both the Royal Academy and the British Council was central to the successful application for UK entry visas for the Ugandan trainees who trained at Pangolin Editions for three years before returning to set up the new Art Centre and foundry in Uganda. Vital support also came from David Drew, MP for Stroud, Sir Nicholas Serota, Director of the Tate and Glynn Williams, Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art.
